Sean Gordon

I am a self-taught ceramic artist originally from Scotland, now based in

Brisbane, Australia which I have called home for since 2011. My mother is a

potter, so clay was always part of my world, but I returned to it as an adult

during a difficult period. At first it was a form of therapy, then quickly

became a vessel for self-discovery, a way to understand myself and feel at

home in my own skin. Through it, I’ve learned to be more open, authentic,

and unafraid to be seen. My practice has grown into a calling that gives me

direction, purpose, and a vision for my future.

Through my practice, Green Bird Ceramics, I create hand-built works shaped

by touch, instinct, and a lifelong fascination with birds. Most of my

inspiration comes from those I encounter in the wild, though I often draw

from photographs, books, or documentaries to develop my own

interpretations. Birds are my constant motif and stand-ins for the human

experience, allowing me to explore themes close to my heart such as

queerness, identity and neurodivergence. I intend for my work to hold space

for identity, self-expression and playfulness.

While my smaller works reach people through markets and stockists, my

focus is on developing a sustained artistic practice and exhibiting career. My

goal is to bring the humour, tenderness, and depth within my work into

gallery contexts, creating pieces that are playful on the surface yet speak to

visibility, belonging, and the beauty of being seen.
