MEET THE ARTIST(S)

At the heart of Green Bird Ceramics is a creative life shared — here’s a little glimpse into the people (and parrots) behind the pieces.

SEAN GORDON / FOUNDER & CERAMICS ARTIST

Sean (he/him) is a self-taught ceramic artist based in Brisbane, working under the name Green Bird Ceramics. His practice is rooted in a love for Australian birdlife, storytelling, and the joy of slow, tactile making.

Originally from Scotland, Sean brings a sense of wonder and character to each of his handbuilt pieces — from puffed-up pigeons to strutting ibises — celebrating the charm, humour, and personality of native birds. His work is often inspired by birds he spots around his garden, on walks, or simply ones he wishes to encounter one day in the wild.

Living as a late diagnosed autistic and proudly queer, Sean approaches his art as both an expressive outlet and a way of connecting with others. Every bird is shaped, glazed, and finished by hand in his home studio, often under the watchful eyes of his two real-life Eclectus parrots, Eric and Calvin.

Sean exhibits locally and regularly appears at art and design markets alongside his husband and creative partner, Gerard.

THE GREEN BIRD CERAMICS FAMILY

While Green Bird Ceramics began as Sean’s personal creative venture, it has grown into a true team effort. His husband, Gerard, now plays a key role in the day-to-day — from slab rolling, wedging clay (all the fun jobs!) to driving to and packing birdies at markets.

Their parrots and original muses, Eric and Calvin, are never far from the studio — equal parts inspiration, chaos, and emotional support birds.

Proudly a queer-owned ceramics business — affectionately referred to as their little Qizness — Green Bird Ceramics is a reflection of both their creativity and values. Building something so personal and joy-filled together has been incredibly rewarding.

You’ll often spot Sean and Gerard together at markets — behind their wooden display, with shelves full of curious, colourful birdy ceramics, but quietly proud of what they’ve created.
